After 20 emotional goodbyes, 6000 photos and 100 children; it was time to embark on the first leg of our road trip. We were on our way to Washington DC.
After four hours of six people and six suitcases squished into the back of a five seater car we arrived at our hostel. We were staying at Capitol Comfort Hostel located in the heart of the city. It wasn't the nicest of places to stay but for 20 dollars a night, we couldn't complain.
Washington DC is crammed with museums and history, everything is photogenic and it is a definite must on the travel bucket list. Bus tours aren't necessary when everything is within walking distance!
If you think the monuments are beautiful during the day, they are even more beautiful at night. It's so much less crowded and far more photo opportunities. My favourites were the Abraham Lincoln and World War II Memorials.
My favourite museum was by far The Smithsonian Natural History Museum. We also visited the Smithsonian Museum of American History and the Spy Museum. Considering the American History museum is free, if you can spare a couple hours I would definitely recommend a visit. The Spy Museum costs 20 dollars entry and probably isn't worth it if you're on a tight budget. (although you do get to see a lipstick pistol!)
The Hard Rock Cafe in Washington DC is BY FAR the best Hard Rock Cafe I had visited in the states. Maybe that's because we completely embarrassed ourselves by singing one of our favourite camp songs (Livin' on a Prayer) at the top of our voices. Also Crumbs the Cupcake shop is most definitely worth a visit, their cupcakes are TO DIE for.
If you were as lucky as I was and had an amazing American friend who had their car, go visit Great Falls Park the scenery is beautiful and they provide multiple trails for you to walk, all varying between 1-4 hours.
Washington DC is a beautiful city and missed out by a lot of people who do Camp America, but I had the best time in Washington and because everything is so close, you don't have to pay for public transport. You could probably cram everything you want to do in a space of 3 or 4 days in Washington, so it doesn't take too much of your valuable 30 days!!
